Does reverse work OK ?

With the engine off ( ! ) depress the clutch and try (carefully) to select 5th gear. Will it go in and appear to select OK ?

The noise points towards internal issues, although its on "the end" in the extension housing from what I recall, it may be quite annoying to try to sort it in situ.

Fifth gear vibration and wear is not unknown on a good many vehicles, where 5th speed cogs are on an unsupported "outboard end" of the shafts (i.e. bearing only on one side of the gears). Usually accessible by removing box end cover. Dates back to when a fifth gear was a bit of an afterthought.

I repaired 5th on an CX that had lost synchro by removing the endplate, not the easiest of jobs but certainly easier than taking the gearbox out!

Not heard of a 5th failing on one of these boxes, usually 1st, however.......

Ken,
You're probably right. My comment was about 5-speed boxes in general.

I know what you mean, its in the extension itself usually with reverse gear.

It's not unknown on this box (assuming it's a BE3). 5th is outside the main casing and suffers from 2 issues - either the shaft nut comes loose, or low oil level causes the gears to break. Seems more common on motorhomes - perhaps because of the added weight. It should be sortable in place.

Here's a thread with similar issue:

Citrojim's box rebuild info which shows how to get the 5th gear off: http://www.eastment.net/be3%20gearbox.htm
