V6 Auto box oil

Post by fatherjack2002 »

Hi folks, what is the type, or code for the oil in the V6 autobox ? I ask this question as there is a local ( oil and gas) supplier who may be able supply at a lot less than the main dealer, or GSF.
Also i've been told it's recommended do a second oil change about 1k after, as the torque converter will still have the original oil in it.
Does this sound about right ?

Hi Paul,

Only use genuine Esso/Mobil LT71141 and ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ELSE

This topic has been covered in great detail in the past on here and a quick search will reveal..

Don't you dare use anything else or anything that claims to be compatible. It isn't. End of..

LT71141 is light straw in colour and smells like rancid cat's pee.

Those ATFs that claim to be compatible are based on DEXRON and they definitely are not!

Yes, as the Torque Converter traps around 4 litres of ATF not all of it can be changed in one go so a second change is recommended soon after.

Alasdair's is a manual Maurice, so its gearbox oil just stinks awfully of what manual gearbox oil stinks of. All I know is it makes me feel sick.. I was actually doing a bodge to get him home safely after his fuel lines became dislodged.

Oddly, with LT71141, smell besides, it upsets my stomach when I work with it for any length of time, say when rebuilding a gearbox... The only oil I know that does. I've swallowed enough LHM over the years know that doesn't cause such a problem...

LHM is a rather excellent hair conditioner. It makes it very soft ;)

It's my natural position in life Maurice

Never happier than when I'm lying under an old Citroen ;)

I tried lying under old women for a while but I had to stop when the wife found out.

Just noticed, what's the 0xHeart at the bottom right of each post?

It's the number of times that particular post has been "liked" by another member.

Just to show I've liked your last post.

Hi, going back to the oil change matter, this may sound a basic question, but once the oil is removed how much is refilled, as the torque converter will still be holding some amount of oil ? Also how many liters does the box hold ?
cheers Paul.

You should measure the amount that came out, and start by putting the same amount of new oil in. Then you follow the method for checking the fluid level and arefully add moe until the level is correct. 1997 and 1998 transmissions have a dipstick, later transmissions don't and the level is checked via level plugs.
