Hi, I seem to have acquired a small collection of French cars over the last year or so. I have 3 Peugeots and a Citroen all with xud engines and I also have a Renault 18 diesel.

My other 305 SR is fitted with an xud turbo from a 306, I bought it like this so know nothing about fitting xud's from one car into another.

I also had a pair of diesel 309's

But I've recently swapped the phase 2 309 for a Renault 18 gtd which I've owned twice in the past and is now sitting with a snapped cam belt...

Enough about that, what I'd like to know is how easy is it to fit the xud turbo engine from this

Or would I be better of buying a cheap 306 diesel and fitting the engine from that instead?

Re: 305 SRD
The vacuum pump is probably the problem. Thee are two types. One is belt driven from the wrong end of the camshaft as on the 305 and earlier 405 etc.
The other type is driven directly by the camshaft and is bolted directly to the head.
The BX has the pulley at the gearbox end of the camshaft for driving the hydraulic pump. The Xantia uses the accessory belt to drive the hydraulic pump. I don't know if it's possible to fit a vacuum pump.
What would be nice is a 2Litre 8 valve hdi engine.

Re: 305 SRD
great collection of cars, that. I don't know about the Xantia TD swap, but is it worth the aggravation for the sake of a bit of extra grunt?

Re: 305 SRD
The swap would be ok.. Shame to kill a xantia though scott.. You can go two ways.. The xantia p reg will have an end on cam vaccum pump so its there already for you..
You can also possibly with a bit of fettleing fit the 305 xud cam in the engine and remove the end cap on the xantia head which is a bolted cap.. And fit the gearbox mounted pump..
The engine the 305 sbould have always have had.. There might be an issue with the inlet though.. The xantias is quite high up with front mounted intercooler but the 306/405 / BX inlet will simply fit onto the engine.. Everything will be bolt changeable scott.. Not a hard job at all!!

Re: 305 SRD
This may or may not be helpful, if nothing else for donor purposes:
205D / DT = all 205's with / without turbo are 1.8.
Later models (post 93 approx)
N/A units without PAS have a cam driven vacuum pump.
N/A units with PAS have a belt drive vacuum pump and a belt drive PAS pump, both from the far end of the cam.
Turbo units with or without PAS all have a belt drive vacuum pump and a belt drive PAS pump as there is no '1.8 cam with drive dogs' for a vacuum pump.
Earlier models (pre 93)
All have belt drive vacuum pump, with or without PAS.
309 quite similar (turbo models at least) , the N/A 309 is a 1.9 though in most cases I think. I'm not sure if it has a belt or direct drive vacuum pump. Turbo models certainly are belt drive.
Intercoolers: 205 and 309 do not have. 306 / 405 / 406 does. 306 / 405 have 'top mounted' intercooler. Look under bonnet and you'll see the air scoops. 406 (and Xantia I'd assume) have front mounted intercooler around radiator area.
306/405/406 all have direct drive vacuum pumps from the cam 'dog' as these models all drive their PAS (where fitted) from the accessory belt from the crank pulley.
