Cost for replacing outer CV gaiter
Think it is time to get it replaced before next MOT and before it causes any problems. Any idea of the total cost (part and labour)?

Just the boot?
I guess 35 quid each each side. This is what my workshop charges my customers.
Any mechanic could replace this within 1hour if it is not a hardened boot.

That's quite reasonable. Had the other side replaced a year ago when i changed the steering rack and asked them to do both but was told there was not need - that will teach me!

Re: Cost for replacing outer CV gaiter
By the looks of it there are 2 types of shaft - one you can do on the car, the other needs to come off and the inner joint taken apart. But I suppose you could do even the type that should be done from the back with a stretchy boot. Quite difficult to get the shaft out of the hub on an X7 - I very much doubt you will get it for £35, twice that perhaps...or 4 times at the dealer!

Re: Cost for replacing outer CV gaiter
If some driveshafts are cheaper than refitting a boot just replace the whole driveshaft.

Driveshafts go for £150+ so not going to replace it.
Richard - how do you know which type? Is it different for Auto or Manual?

It looks like they are used interchangeably - you will need to have a look at the shaft and find the label on it. GKN cannot be done by removing the outer joint, whereas PSA and NTN types can. Like I say though, you could do either with a stretchy boot.

+1 on the stretch boot easiest way.

Re: Cost for replacing outer CV gaiter
I did mine with a split boot that glued together no problem. No need to undo driveshaft at all!

Re: Cost for replacing outer CV gaiter
Too many options!
I think the consensus about split boots is that they don't last very long and it can be a messy job.
What sort of stretchy boot is compatible with the X7?
Is there a part number/link for the PSA and NTN types?

Re: Cost for replacing outer CV gaiter
Stretch boots are awkward to do on the car with that mad cone. Slippy things. Even the makers say to pull drive shaft onto the bench. If doing so get a new driveshaft seal into gearbox and some oil to top up.

You might consider getting this and do it by your self.

Flipping heck! Something from Anne Summers?
