Picasso Hdi Elec HELP

Post by spiketheguru »

Hi all.

Strange one this..

My daughter has a 2002 picasso hdi 2.0.
Went to start it the other day and ign light came on but no cranking over.
Tries again and now no ign light or electrics..
Simples methinks its obv battery but no.Batt shows 12.6 volts.
Simples methinks..Jump it..
Nope-jump leads to pos underbonnet and another on earth on engine and huge sparks!

Jump leads onto batt connections does nothing.
Mega fuses are ok..Am I missing something obvious here lol.

Theres not even any power to fuse box under bonnet. The whole car is dead but has a fully charged battery connected!

HELP!!!

Thank you for reading.

Still could be the battery, they can show 12v or more with no load which can drop to nothing as soon as you draw some current. First thing to check is the battery connections, wiggling them about will often effect a cure but if it does they need taking off and cleaning.

Thanks guys.
Ive tried wiggling the cables and also putting booster cables directly onto the battery leads..still nothing at all.The sparks under the bonnet when I try to jump it should be a clue here I think but im not great on diagnosing electrics, looks like I need an expert..

Sounds like a break in the battery negative lead to me or a corroded fuse connection.
Can you swap the battery in the car with the jumper one to see what happens?

You got a multimeter?
Set it to Resistance (Ohms / Ω)
One battery lead at a time check between the clamp and the other end of the lead, you should get a reading. If not theres a break in the lead.
Some cars do have a fuse in the battery lead, no idea if your Picasso does or not.

..also check the resistance from the negative connection to the body/engine, should be near enough zero, or check the voltage should also be zero.

Well done for finding the fault (OK, your mate found it, but it got found, and that is the important detail), and thanks for posting up that it was found. That will help anybody who has a similar fault.
