Xantia - How to replace steering wheel column ?

Unread post by lancia58 »

Hi

The upper bearing of the steering column in my MK II Xantia is worn , causing the steering wheel to rattle. I sourced a used steering column from a wracked car. When I detached the steering wheel from the steering column , one meter of a ribbon like ( part of the steering wheel air bag ) popped out. I want to replace the steering column on my car with the one I sourced. How can it be done without causing this ribbon to pop out, and keeping the air bug components in their place ?
Is there any thread describing the procedure ?

Thanks
Zohar

Before you remove the steering wheel, the ribbon cables should be unplugged from the airbag and the radio controls. Then when you remove the wheel, the cables are fed out through the hole in the boss of the wheel, leaving the whole of the rotary connector (or clock spring), attatazched to the steering column.

The rotary connector can then be removed from the steering column by disconnecting the connectors to the car wiring and removing the 3 screws.

Note that it is important to have the front wheels pointing straight ahead, and the rotary connector in its mid- position when reassembling.
