1998 Xantia full lock noise

Post by foeism »

Hi

I have noticed that when the steering wheel in on full lock to the left and the steering wheel can't be turned any further, as I turn the wheel to the roght to put it straight there is a load "thud" as I start to turn it from full lock.
Steering is light and never heavy....any ideas......did do a search on google, but nothing seemed to match.

thanks

Top mounts. Are they looking ok or a little worn and rotten?

Hmm, thats odd. Even from under the wheel arch? The reason i say is because my 206 knocked like buggery when the top mounts were gone. Droplinks and balljoints would only really knock when mobile. Could be track rod but then it'd knock every time you turned.

Yeah it is strange only on full lock to the left, and only one thud like youv'e pulled something free? rather strange :?: :?:

Worth checking rear bushes on the front wishbone as these can provide that 'Donk' noise when badly worn. Also worth checking bottom ball joints for any movement. What are your CV joints like? No splits in the gaiters?

Silly suggestion based on a similar symptom I had on a Corsa years ago. Check your brake pads...I had one where the friction material had separated from the backing (but was still trapped in the caliper), and it produced symptoms very lime what you describe.

Easy check at least! Not one I ever would have expected, but a new set of pads solved it in my case!
