Not Citroen but I will ask anyway

Post by daviemck2006 »

Please dont all take the huff and ban me cos Im gonna ask something about a ****. Leaking petrol tank so it could be a citroen! Is there anything I can do to stop a leak on the petrol tank. It's leaking on the seam about 1/2 way up the tank. It got filled to the neck and 30 miles later was just over 1/2. Up on the ramps and can see a steady drip, like about every 4 to 5 seconds. I used it today and did 50 miles deliberately to get the fuel level down. It is now not dripping about 1/2 way between 1/2 and 1/4. So it will need a tank, but cant find one locally. Who said ford escort bits were got anywhere? So is there any substance I can get to put over the leak that seals it. We have decided, and I am using this pile of poo just now, just to run it until the light comes on and only put it £10 at a time and carry a gallon in the boot. Not the best Idea. If it could be bodged somehow that would see it til we find a tank it would be good. Cant really get my mate to weld it,,,,,,,,,,,,,

there used to be a substance, was a resin catalyst lump, that was supposed to be able to seal underwater leaks in swimming pools,
called Pig Putty. in a plastic tube, cut off a bit mash it between your fingers, and apply to the area...........google "hot pigs" if I recall correctly.

I HAVE managed in the past to do a temporary repair with Araldite..........best o luck.......

I can't find it any more, but there used to be a product called "Slosh", specifically for sealing up pin holes in petrol tanks.
It takes just as much work as replacing the tank, but if a tank is not available...
What you do is remove the tank, clean it out thoroughly (we used a steam washer), dry it (warm room/dehumidifier), then slosh this stuff around inside it, coating the whole inside.
When set, the result is a plastic-like coating on the inside of the tank. It can be a pain, though, because it will happily block the holes you want to keep free, too!
As a last resort, it could be the answer, if you can find it.
Try car restorers/classic car publications, as that would be the target market for this stuff.
I'm not sure it's compatible with non-metal tanks, so check first, if you want to use it on anything more modern than your Ford.

this is the correct stuff for petrol tank repairs

http://www.granvilleoil.com/product_info.php?prod_id=2" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

or if you brave enough you could run some braze along the tank seem :yikes: [-X :-D

Petropatch does work pretty well.

Please citronut don't suggest putting a flame near the petrol tank even in jest, there are some out there who are daft enough to give it a try.

I've found petropatch on ebay, I also found a new tank for £58 on ebay. If it seals with petropatch would that pass a mot when the time comes? The car is quite sound and Shaun still wants to keep it.

IF there is no leak at the time of inspection and no damage repair that looks like it will fail soon, then it will pass the MoT.

I've let my son know the options, and its up to him now. It's his car and I wont have to use it again shortly. He is 20 and should be finding out this stuff himself. So if I ask anything else about a fraud tell me to bugger off :rofl2:

I repaired my daughter's fiesta tank with Petropatch. Lasted about six months but gave us time to find a replacement.
Tank was very rusty along the seams.

It's basically petropatch for a tenner, probably a temporary fix which will last until mot time and see what else it needs, or new tank 58 quid, proper fix. Personally I wouldn't look for a used one from a scrappy when new is only 58. It's up to him now.

The issue is here that it is possible - I've watched it being done - an old Commer camper having its tank welded .. BUT unless it's done properly it's (-expletive removed-) dangerous.

I've done them myself when there's been no alternative Mike but as you say it does need proper know how and great care, not a job for the average diy man.

Back when I was in business I had the boys from Badfinger music group as customers, they had a Jaguar XK150 which had petrol pouring from a leaking seam which was not fixable with petropatch and no new tank available. Their roadies took the tank out and completely wrapped it in Holts fibreglass sheet so in effect they had a tank within a tank.
