You have to remove the timing belt first than I think its held on by three bolts. Are you sure the pump is faulty and its not the pressure regulator?

Are we talking about an Hdi or XUD engine?

Ignore this, I can't read.

I believe that the HP pump is AFTER the fuel filter, so fillings in the filter are more likely to be the in tank lift pump.

Leakage isn't the problem, the pump disintegrates, if there are filings in the filter the lift pump needs replacing. I had this problem with mine and what finally showed up was filings in the fuel pressure regulator on the HP pump which blocked it and caused all manner of engine problems. I thought it was the pump and changed it but when I subsequently fitted the old regulator all the problems returned.

The fuel pump shouldn't be that expensive, or difficult to replace. I think this is what you are looking for;

There are others on e-bay, that was the first one I found.

The problem is where the fillings came from. The fuel starts in the tank, is moved by the lift pump, passes through a fuel cut-off, then through the filter onto the HP pump, into the common rail and then through the injectors into the cylinders (assuming I have got this right), passing through various lengths of pipework on the way. That means that you can eliminate everything after the fuel filter as a cause for the filings.

The pump will still function perfectly - it just fills the fuel system with metal filings, its a well known problem.
