306 Air Conditioning
Hi, I have a bit of an odd problem. The a/c compressor clutch only comes on when I move the ignition to the first click with the key. When I go to start the car, the compressor clutch disengages and the air conditioning doesn't work. If I "jummy rig" the compressor from the connector near the exhaust manifold directly to the positive on the battery, the a/c clutch engages and everything works fine. But obviously this means the a/c is on all the time and don't want that cos of the extra strain on the start and such. Would anyone know what is wrong so I can get the starter to engage at the right time and I can have my lovely a/c on Thanks in advance

Assuming the ECU (which is a pretty basic one) is working, you need to satisfy the following conditions for compressor operation:
Adequate system pressure (neither too low, nor too high)
Cabin fan working, including feedback wire from fan control module
Switches and relays operating correctly
Pug Planet will show you if the system "sees" the AC switch depressed.

Re: 306 Air Conditioning
there is a container with 2 relays in, located behind the battery. many many wires going into it. Is this anything to do with the a/c?
Re: 306 Air Conditioning
oh, I am not sure if it is related, the radiator cooling fans come on even if the car has just started and cold, they also stat o for about 5 mins after the car has stopped (even if the car is at normal operating temp). is this related?
Re: 306 Air Conditioning
what do u mean by 3 round dials? where are they located and I will have a look.
Re: 306 Air Conditioning
there is one for fan speed (including turning it down for auto a/c), one for output position and one for temperature. Same as:

Re: 306 Air Conditioning
it is an electric fault, I am sure of it. if I turn the ignition on one click, and then push the a/c button, I can hear the a/c compressor clutch click on. likewise if I turn off the a/c button I can hear it disengage. It just seems to be engaging at the wrong time at the ignition and should be coming on when the engine is running not at the time of turning the car on. It goes off when I go any further than the first click at the turn of the key.
