C5 2.0L snapped cambelt, likely damage.

Unread post by handyman »

I've been offered a C5, 2.0i petrol engined, with a snapped cambelt. Its a very low mileage, long MOT & quite tidy, so might be a worthy proposition if internal damage is not too bad. What is the likely damage to be? Bent valves, snapped cam caps, snapped camshafts?

I know what happens on the earlier TU engines, but not on these later DW lumps.

16 new valves, I'd check the pistons all came up to the same deck height and dust a little talc on the crowns after decarbonising.

Don't know about petrol engines but on the 8 valve diesel it only usually breaks the rockers, not even a head off job.

A 2.0 petrol will be an EW engine not a DW, do you know if it's an HPi or not ? I would avoid an HPi like the plague even without a snapped timing belt.
Either way 99% chance of valve damage, cams & carriers normally ok.

When the belt went on my 16v bx I was lucky to get away with valves only, was a 50mph gentle acceleration from a 40 when it went,
You may get away with a head swap if your lucky??

Thanks for the info, chaps. =D> Gone off the idea now, given the costs involved, as I was only going to buy it, sort it out & sell it on. [-X [-X 8-[

Petrol C5's are completely worthless, so i'd save the effort as you'll be unlikely to find a buyer even at £500. The diesels are cheap anyway, so there's little demand for the petrol one's, which means if you were going to fix it to keep, then its a lot of car for little money.
