Xantia 1.8 16v gearbox

Post by xf1ref »

Hello again,
Although I solve the problem with the heater matrix, new one came. On the road to work when I wanted to change in the fourth gear the gearbox made a crunchy noise.
Now I can not use anymore the fourth gear, the shifter jump out.
I will repair this by myself and with this occasion I will change the clutch kit.
The question is, Is possible to dismantle the gearbox without the engine somehow underneath the car?

Yes, you can remove gearbox from car on its own, after taking drive shafts out, both sides, put jack under the engine, take weight, take off the gearbox mount, take off the clutch cable, take off starter, take off the pressure regulator off the front of the gearbox..

lower the engine a little bit.. undo the bolts holding gearbox to engine, three at the top, one at the front, then under theres a plate to remove, and theres a bolt up the back also. Remove speedo sensor plug,

Remove box off engine, and it will come out under the car.

Could anyone please tell me what other xantia have same gearbox like mine. I found one from a 2.0 engine but I don't know if it fits.

This is typical, I kept hold of a 80,000 MILE petrol gearbox for months, but no one wanted it! Now its gone.

If the 2.0 is an 8v then it will be fine, they are the same block and so same bolt patten position on the block..

Succes, yesterday I managed to mount the gearbox and it works. The syncro hub ring was made at a turning shop. The clutch is new and it feel very soft but I have a little problem....sometimes does not want to enter in gear, particularly in 1,2, 5 and reverse, but sometimes works fine.
Any advice is welcome.

Well done, I haven't repaired gearboxes for many years. It now sounds as though as though the clutch is not disengaging properly.

I nearly always used scrap gearboxes for my parts but that must be difficult for you.

Yes, difficult in financially way. I found gearbox at scrap but it was expensive. The syncro hub was made for free and all the work to dismantle the gearbox, change clutch kit, change steering rack gaiter and change new bottom ball joint was made by me and my father and some friends and some beer  ..and last but not the last the help from this forum :tgif:

I could have used some engineering skills like that. There were so many scrap vehicles over here that spares were not that expensive.

Another curiosity, at xantia 1.8 16v the pressure bearing spins all time when the engine is running, even the clutch pedal is not pressed?
