2009 C5 handbrake error message

Post by Napoleon »

Odd one, this. At least, to me.

Got in the car yesterday, fired her up, and as soon as that done, the service light came on and a message on the screen about the handbrake. I can't remember the exact words, but it was along the lines of, 'Fault with Anti-Roll back system'.

I soon worked out that this was something to do with the handbrake, as the car would not release the handbrake. I couldn't even drive off through it.

I killed the motor and re-started it, and the 'problem' seemed to have gone. No error message, no service light, no sticking on handbrake.

So what's going on? Any ideas?

Was it a cold morning?
If it's anything like the earlier C5s, a less than perfect battery and a bit of heavy cranking can lower the voltage enough to produce spurious error messages.

@ napoleon - I'm guessing you have an electronic brake? If so, there should be a safety lever than unlocks the brake in such cases in the handrest compartment (where the OBD2 port is located)

dnsey - it was about 1 in the afternoon. A bit cold, but nothing nasty. We had noticed a bit of slow cranking, however, over the last couple of weeks or so.

@ vborovic - yes, I believe it is electric brake. I also believe there is a release handle, if needed.

I have driven the car today, and no signs of the same thing happening.

If you don't have a mechanical handle (classic solution), but rather a short flap that's resting below the handrest, than that is the electric handbrake ...

EDIT: just to add, I remember having some discussions about the two different handbrakes in the X7s, possibly with qprdude, a few months ago ... and I still believe that the classical lever is way safer, in terms of it working or not, I don't like the idea of the car being able to lock the brakes on a whim, whatever the reason ...

Yes, it's as per your picture.

Very sleek in the pic than real life, btw.

Sounds like the hill start assist. If it's OK now, I wouldn't worry about it. Just take more care with hill starts until you can tell if it's working. You get 2 seconds of a hold, before the car starts to roll back (or forward).

We've discussed this already, I thought hill assist doesn't have anything to do with brakes ... I have a regular handbrake, when uphill (or downhill), I release the foot brake, the car is in D(rive), and it won't go anywhere, and waits for the throttle input ... of course, it won't wait forever, 3-4 secs max ... that would mean the engine is the one doing the holding of the car in place, no? ...

It's certainly the brakes on ou 2008 C4 Picasso (manual). It's the normal brakes though, rather than the handbrake - the car uses the valves in the ABS block to hold the pressure in the brakes till you move off, or 2 seconds elapses.

It is also the handbrake on the 2008 C5 Exclusive. It's on page 80 of the PDF hand-book. The message "fault with anti roll-back" accompanied by a couple of icons, means that the electronic hand-brake automatic function is disabled and the brake must be released manually.

Getting the same with a 2008 X7 manual with automatic handbrake. Not been able to reproduce it reliably.

I had same problem. Recharging battery fixed it. It may also be the fusebox that causes it... If battery voltage drops, there´s not enough current to release handbrake.
