C5 - Cranking engine without starting it

Post by hamster99 »

Hi Guys
How do I turn over my 2.0 HDI engine without starting it?
Is there something I need to disconnect?

must be quite a few things that would stop her starting, and are easy to get to,.,
someone will know :)

all else fails the main injector rail feed should do it, bit of a pain to get to though

If you can get to it under the rear seat, unplug the low pressure fuel pump - assuming it's got one.

Easiest way is to unplug the camshaft position sensor, remember just about anything you disconnect to do this will log a fault code that should be cleared incase there is ant confusion with any future faults.

Try taking the battery out of the keyfob....but put it back quickly in between turning the car over or it may need to be re-programmed.

Would it not be easier to pull the fuse for the fuel pump?

That wont stop the engine firing, the battery in the keyfob is only for the remote locking, not the immobiliser.
You could however wrap the plastic part of the key in a few layers of tinfoil which will stop it firing.

It may not even have an electric fuel pump depending what HDi it is, probably still easier to either just unplug the camshaft sensor, easily accessible right at the top of the engine or shield the key with foil.

I'm interested to know why you want to spin the engine without starting. Just being nosey.

After doing an engine oil & filter change, I always disconnect the stop solenoid on my TD so that the engine will spin without firing up. I like to see the oil warning light go out before firing up, to make sure the new oil fliter, oilways & bearings are fully primed with the new oil.

I have just changed the turbo and I want to make sure there is plenty of oil pushed through to the turbo shaft bearings before I actually start it.

PS - one person's "nosey" is another person's "opportunity to learn something new"..........think I heard that on a management course once...!!!
