Xantia Estate - Howling Wind!

Post by ecohouse1 »

Hi folks

Odd one here. I have noticed that when driving the Xant, I get this wind howl sound, especially around 50-60 mph. You can also hear gusts of wind hitting the car by the change in tone.Hard to say where its coming from but it appears to be worse when there are other people in the car! Maybe its just psychological! I assume maybe door seals are getting stiff and there are maybe small gaps causing it?

Has anyone else had this?

No water leaks that I can see.

Cheers

I'd look at panel gaps then. If the doors are misaligned (per the usual break shortcomings) you may well be stirring up the breeze that way.

On my 1995 Estate it was the door seals.

Indeed and most likely. The driver's one wears terribly. Also check all doors are fully closing against the seals and that you do not have the start of the well-known estate problem of the top hinge of the driver's door starting to separate from the A pillar..

Get someone else in the car to pull each door inward hard when you have the noise, the noise should reduce when the appropriate one is pulled.

On mine, as Jim says, it was the drivers door seal. It'd sound like I hadn't shut the door properly it was so bad, much worse in the rain, it sounded like water was coming in.

LOL, it does on mine - I keep a lap rug (old beach towel) within reach to blot the drips up. A legacy of poor repair to the upper hinge on the OSF door.

Normally adjusting the door catch is enough unless the seal is disintegrating.

Thanks for the advice. I will try the catch adjustment first, then maybe live with if it doesn't work! Cheers
