I don't really see the issue with part-worns as long as you get a chance to have a quick look at them before they go on and they're a reasonable brand.

Everyone buys a set of part worns when they buy a secondhand car... I know some are obsessive and change them all immediately, but most don't..

Something you might want to try is your local scrappie. I did (being somewhat short of readdies), and got 4 185/65R15 for £80 (fitted onto the rims), and balanced for another £20. The scrappie didn't have any Xantias, but I got the tyres off a Renault Scenic. I had to get them swapped over between rims as the Scenic has different bolt hole placement.

You have to inspect the tyres yourself thoroughly, as it is a case of "Buyer Beware", but the ones I got are pretty good.

True, but once you've got going you only need buy two at a time.

When the fronts are worn out the rears go forward and a new pair go on the back.

My slight variation of that is I've had 2 spares and usually get new tyres fitted on loose wheels, which is a bit cheaper and can sometimes gain on the queue when all the bays are busy.

Should you find yourself in this position again James, there's a place in Slough near M4 junction 7. All his part worns are £15 fitted and balanced...

Sadly being 4wd, my Subaru ruins 4 at a time...
