Had the Xantia HDI a few months now and the fuel consumption is a bit higher than I was hoping for so I've checked the air filter, seems ok, and after a bit of googling it would appear that cleaning the MAF is something I should try. I've located it downstream of the air filter but there don't seem to be any obvious retaining screws or bolts, how is it removed?
I've got some Maplins switch cleaner, I presume this is the right stuff, or is contact cleaner something different?
Would easi-start be a step too far?
Anything else I should be looking at? I'm certainly going to give it some slick 50 fuel system treatment when funds allow.

It's just held in my the jubilee clips on a Xantia. What's it doing to the gallon - my estate has returned a pretty steady 45 in the near 100k miles I've had it....

Someone used Forte intake cleaner stuff on mine and it knackered it so be cautious.

I'm getting about 36-38 I think,a lot of under 12 mile journeys,with a roof rack,and quite a bit of 50-60mph A road/motorway driving.
Is the MAF a complete unit then? Video's show a small unit being removed from the trunking.
I'm going to be very gentle with it, plenty of warnings.

Only use cleaner specifically for MAF sensors. Just type 'maf cleaner' into an ebay search and it should list products made by CRC.

The MAF specific cleaners don't leave any residue, which I suspect brake cleaner and the like do. Cleaned mine last year and the cleaner certainly removes a lot of built up deposits. If you search on YouTube there are some clips. Sorry hopeless at posting links!!

If you cannot get hold of any MAF cleaner, contact cleaner probably would work. I would not use switch cleaner though, as some of them have a lubricant added to allow the switch contacts to slide cleanly across, and this might inhibit the MAF sensor.

I used Easystart to clean mine, very volatile stuff and it evaporates very quickly.

Out of interest, what does it actually look like in there? I assume it's two hot wires or two thermistors, one behind the other, connected to a bridge circuit which measures the difference between them, but I could be wrong
