Xantia - Steering wheel rattles a bit inside steering column

When I push the steering wheel up and down in my Xantia I can feel that it rattles a bit in the steering wheel column. Looking at Citroen service I cannot find any bush (as it was in the BX ) . Is it a way to eliminate this ?

Worn universal joint on the column most likely.

It can be replaced but if its done a lot of miles some wear is acceptable, if it rattles while you are driving, getting some grease into it may quieten it down.

Does this mean replacing the whole steering wheel column ?

Depends what you mean by "up and down". Movement along the axis of the steering column will be wear in the UJ. Movement at right angles is play in the top bearing - some is normal even on fairly low mileage Xantias. I don't think there is a replaceable bush in the Xantia.

There isn't The bearing, such as it is, is built into the outer casing of the column and is not a replaceable item. best to source a good column with a good bearing in it...

I'm sure, once this becomes a real problem, a workaround will be found... Have lathe, will make one...

Too much play, in the eyes of an MOT tester, is a fail. I've known a Pug 306 (which uses an essentially similar column) fail for just this reason.
