Xantia outer tie rod emd ball joint

Post by magictorch »

Morning. Any tips on stopping the ball joint bolt from spinning when undoing the nut? I am replacing the steering rack boot on the O/S. I tried a g clamp, mould grips and cleaned up thread. All to no avail. Rain stopped play last night #-o

Give the balljoint a big whack from the top with a big hammer to sit it back tight in its taper and then try doing the nut up a little. If that succeeds then carefully clean the exposed threads and soak in Plus-Gas. Undo the nut in a backwards and forwards action until it's off, whacking the balljoint top again if it should break out of its taper again.

In the past I've also cleaned up the end of the exposed thread by running a die nut up it. An ordinary nut will do the job too.

If all fails then try a nut splitter on the nut or if that fails it's a case of angle-grinding it off and replacing the track rod end...

if what Jim says fails i use a long bar hooked under something solid at the sub frame end in such a way the bar also lays across the top of the swvel joint,

the bar needs to be long enough for you to sit on the outer end to add weight onto the swivel joint whilst undoing the nut
