all locks just spin

Unread post by john »

hi, i cant use the key to lock either the doors or the boot on my newly acquired mk1 berlingo, all the key does is just spin, on the drivers door it feels "notchy", ive had a look inside the passenger side and it looks ok, can also see a couple of wires going into a box which i guess is the central locking? if thats the case when i push 1 of the door pins shouldn't all doors lock?

try pushing the key in hard as you turn it, this worked on my XANT when it did it,

with the dentral locking try pushing one of the fron door lock buttons down with the doors shut,

i find it really strange that all the locks spin, 1 is unlucky, 2 is bad luck but 3?

The barells on the Berlingo/Partner and Dispatch/Expert spin when you dont push the key right. Not to say yours arnt just borked but They need a small amount of pressure to turn right. Try inserting th ekey in the other way up too.

Surely if it's all locks then the key is most likely to be worn not the locks?

There's a thought, ignition barrel could have been replaced, and if a previous owner always used the remote central locking then they'd not need to keep the door keys with them.

if it was the wrong key or a worn key would the lock still turn?

the key works ok on the filler cap and glove box but i have to jiggle it a bit to unlock the steering lock.

Wrong key would just spin, but as it fits the filler cap and glove box then it doesn't sound like it's the wrong key.
Could just be worn, don't suppose it came with a spare?

Probably the pins in the door lock barrels have got stuck with muck and corrosion; the pin springs should make the pins follow the serrations on the key. Try a good work-out with plenty WD40 - squirt in the lock, run the key in and out; repeat until you can feel the pins running over the key serrations. Wipe the key really thoroughly before you fold it back into the plipper!
