Loked at a car with this problem, seller says it is just a small bolt missing at the front of the lever mechanism. I looked at mine and it could be right, no diagrams on my manuals.
Is this an easy fix ? Moving from low to high is ok, not much resistance. Won't hold in any position in between and just drops to low as soon as you sit in it. Just a missing bolt, or 'clutch' system if it has one not working ?
Thanks John

Your Xantia is an S2 , while mine is an S1, but the height control leaver on mine is spring loaded downwards - you have to 'lift it out of a notch' to move it between in each of the 4 positions (and it has a strong tendency to return to NORMAL due to stickiness and the springs in the front and rear height control mechanisms.

You're talking about the driver's seat aren't you?
Pull the plastic side panel off (upwards I think) and tighten the lever mechanism up.

Re: Height adjusting lever won't lock up
This is a general position one with no fixed positions, on a Xsara but I can't take it to bits yet because I haven't bought it.
That said I will take a set of spanners with me and see if tightening the 'clutches' helps. Sounds likely but no reason why it should have a problem with only 24k miles on the clock.... Still, only a minor problem so if tightening is all it takes then no problem, as long as it stays tightened and doesen't keep weakining.
I had a car like that once for the reclining adjustment, about once a week I had to reposition it as it kept slipping backwards.
