The BSi unit is the computer which controls the electrics, its part of the multiplexed system.

Apparently they can be repaired or reset:

eBay is quite a good place for a replacement BSI unit.

Keep an eye out for some listings, it may surprise you.

The BSI contains the coding for the immobiliser, so a used one cannot be fitted unless it is made blank, or the engine Ecu is de mobilised , ie removing its security.
When you it a new one, you have to program the vin no into it, the configuration of all the electrics, ie if it has electric windows, AC etc etc, and then you program in the keys, and the car should start.
