i would think relay at first. as for both not to work there must be 2 switches dead in the stalk as opposed to one dead relay. someone will be along in a bit to say where the relay is, might be worht saying what model of xantia you have

I have exactly the same problem, and it's not the stalk (tried that).
The same timer/relay does both intermittent and wash/wipe. For 1995 model year onwards, this is relay 12 which is the top one of the two located to the left of the fuses (on a RHD car these are hidden behind a trim panel. This relay has 6 pins - I think it's the only one with that many. I haven't had time yet to find a replacement, so I can't be sure that it's the relay, but the evidence is pretty compelling.

Hi Old-Guy & thanks for your post
sounds feasable to me but I have a LHD so any idea where this relay would be? somewhere near the steering column? will try and find it on my dead Xantia as it was all working OK on it, will let you know how I get on

Assuming that Citroen only used completely different components for the RHD minority when absolutely necessary, I'd guess that they used the same fuse-bax/relay board for both LHD and RHD though perhaps in a different location. Providing you know where the under-dash fuse board is, I'd expect to find the relay in the same place (top relay to the left of the spare fuses, behind the trim panel. Logically it would be in the mirror-image location, above the driver's left shin. But maybe that's too simple?

Hi Old-Guy & all
Firstly as promised pictures of my Xantia's, the old (blue) and the new , well new to me...don't you just love photobucket !!!!!
The new again
What fun!!!! and you get to see a little bit of France
Now to the serious stuff................
Wiper relays or not!!
This is under the steering wheel once the plastic covers are removed
the relay top left is the indicator relay there is one underneath left and the two on the right, orange and light grey with what looks like vent holes, I cannot get these buggers out I am afraid I will do some damage is there a special way of getting them out? Is there anyone with a LHD who knows which is which?
As you can see this problem is now solved.
To the right of the green relay bottom left is the screw you can see the silver tag (just) this is the blue (intermitent wipe) relay

Im not 100% sure but i believe the relay you are looking for is right up underneath by the bottom green relay and is held in by a bracket that is bolted/screwed into place.
I had a problem with my mk1 which has now in typical Xantia fashion sorted itself but when fault finding on another mk1 with working wash/wipe and intermittent function removing all obvious relays it still worked and only by touch could i feel the relay clicking, not sure how to get at it though

Hi Colin
How right you are, blue relay tucked right up under the metal frame that holds the green relay and all you can see (with a torch) is a screw head, once the screw in removed you need to curl your fingers and push up the relay so the fixation tab clears its slot then carefully tease the relay down so you can remove it from its socket, what a ridiculous place to site it.
Can this be made a sticky, to aid any other poor person with this fault
