type approved cat or not?

Post by Deanxm »

Im looking at getting a new cat for the XM, i tried Citroe just for a laugh and oh how i laughed so i looked online, i can get a non type approved cat for £80 which is cheap, maybe too cheap, i can get a type approved one for £130, i guess i wnat to know what are the real differences between type and non type approved cats, am i likely to get a better made product or is the monolith just bigger and so less restrictive in the approved type? your thoughts on this are much appreciated.

And yes i did make a decat pipe but for all the talk you hear of removing cats releasing previously caged horses it made no difference whatsoever other than being slightly noisier so i do want to keep the cat now.

There is no more Horses on a N/a 2.oi to release is there??

I couldnt find the 130 that my first XM was meant to have...

I think this Cat business is more effective on Multi valve engines... 16v and 24v rathen then 8v low reving units..

Non type approved exhaust components become an automatic MOT failure from next Jan on recently manufactured cars. Not going to worry us XM owners.

Really???

Was it only 118bhp?? I didn;t think it was that power full...

Its strange really Dean, Ive noticed this on 8v HDi cars, Ive heard rumers that removing the 8v Cat makes them a bit more lively.. I dont find this, as Ive got a de-catted hdi 110, and half the time it feels like a 90bhp... were mums Y reg Xantia HAS got a cat and its much more lively and quicker!!!

I reckon the De catting only works on multi valve engines as I said above.

Yes i read but what are the actualy differences in type and non type approved? if they are designed to meet tighter noise limits or are longer lasting then it may be worth the extra dosh, i understand our cars are too old but why do they offer them as an option to such old cars (ie the 8v XM?)

I dont think it works at all, i took the cat off my Rover, thats a twin cam 16v and it made not one bit of difference.
I watched a program about it (so it must be true  ) they tested 4 totaly different cars with and without cats and the most power gained was 1bhp, most done nothing, i think the only time removing them works is if you are running big power from a small engine otherwise everything is sized accordingly anyway, looking at the exhaust carefully it seems the headers and silencers are far more restrictive than the cats.

Na its a MK2..............
Good point, my cat has lasted 20 years at £130 a pop so £6.50 a year, it would only take 100 years to break even if i bought a carbed one
