c5 auto box
What box does the early C5 2.0 Petrol auto have?

If its a 2.0 HPi petrol C5that is reason enough not to buy it ... if its the 2.0 16v then they are good lumps. The auto box im not sure on, I have been in a automatic 2.0HDi, which I assume had the same box and it was disappointing - noisy gearbox, not excellent changes and hanging on to the gears for longer than most autos. Shame as I wanted to like it as a C5 diesel auto would be a good match. Does anyone know if the 2.2HDi C5 uses a better gearbox?

Are the earlier C5 autos supposed to have a noisy box? I looked at a 2.0HDi 110 auto recently, 50K miles and full Citroen history but the box was extremely loud and so didn't buy it. Disappointing really.

It was whining loudly, the gearchanges were noticeable and the length of time it held onto gears made town driving a chore.
I hope that is not how they should be, as I did think it would be a good combination in the C5, a diesel auto, but it wasn't a nice box.

Whining is bad Chris. It may have been low on fluid. Or else the diff was on the way out... Very sensible to pass it by, especially with rough changes too.
Mine whines very quietly on the over-run under certain circumstances but at nearly 177,000 miles I forgive it

Well that is reassuring and my search might continue for an auto again, as I had only been looking for manuals after experiencing that.

When test-driving a C5 with an AL4 box, slow down to unlocked first gear as often as possible, then accelerate to check for throttle lag.
We’re plagued with them and there’s no solution in sight.
The fault is not hydraulic, it’s the ECU wondering if it should downshift to first gear.

FYI The 2.2 has a 4HP20, the gear selector arrangment is identical as far as I can see on all autobox installations regardless of the box actually fitted, not surprising really as it's all electronic. Having sorted out issues of duff data getting sent to it from the ESP sytem I quite like the combination, my only bitch is it's propensity to change down far to early when descending slopes, but it's easy to overide it and often find myself driving it manually though in all honesty it's hard to improve on what the box does automagically.
The later MkII 2.0 ltr and I believe the 2.2 (172) has a six speed Aisin box.

I had a ZX 1.9 Auto diesel. It was not bad really. I thought it would be p**s poor compared to the Honda boxes we had but it was fine.
