right way up for a thermostat?

Post by eurotrotter »

hey gang which is the correct way up for a thermostat in a dq10 hdi, should the spring side be the highest poin or should it be the nipple part?

i have been putting the nipple part facing up, thats the way i found the old thermostat too.

but when i replaced the old thermostat with the new thermostat, the car actually overheated more!

83 is the rnumber on both thermostats if that holds any relevance.

I will take photos of it and post here, once i find my camera cable!!
here is a pic to how i found the old thermostat, is this the correct way up:

by the waym, the new thermostat looks different, but it fits fine, it still has 83 written on it, but it just looks a little different, should they be absolutely identical?

thanks
ed

Nipple up, spring down is the right way round. If it's overheating, check the stat in a pan of water. Is it really overheating though? Normal running temp for an HDi is 90°C - rising to 100°C before the fans cut in....

it was right so, normal for a hdi is 78-80 degrees, from my understanding and i have done a lot of research on this, not being smart or anything.

but the new thermostat cases the car to run at 90 degrees!

i removed teh thermostat a couple of days out, just to see what would happen drove ont eh autobahn at 80mph for an hour and the temp went from 80degrees, to 60 degrees- lowest point on temp gauge!

and stayed there, until i got in the city, and as soon as i went back on the open road it went down in temp very quiclly and would go to 60 degrees within 4 minutes say!

No, wrong I'm afraid  Stat OPENING temp is 83°C won't get to full open to 90°C or so. With a new stat fitted my HDi 110 (Xantia) runs at just a smige under 90 on light load, drops a bit if you give it some welly and get the heat up and the stat full open. If the AC is off, fans do not come on low speed till temp reaches about 100°C - high fan speed is higher than this (unless the AC calls for it - had it happen once when I put the AC on in hot traffic jam when it was already up to 100°C - whole car vibrates!). Seems high for a diesel, but that is what it's designed for! The old stat gave out at about 100k miles / 160k km and running temp dropped to about 75.

83 is right. OE fit one removed from my Xantia was stamped 83. You might be able to buy a lower one, but why bother, PSA designed it to run that way, so it will be fine

An 83 stat is correct and it should run around 90 degrees, ever so slightly more on a long hill climb etc
