Diesel leak

Unread post by fridgedoc »

Hi Guys

What is going on!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have just sorted one leak (on a sphere) now I've got another this time on the fuel filter, the car did not start on the initial turnover, it normally did and Mrs fridgedoc took 3 or 4 attempts before it started, so bonnet up, tried to pressurise system with bulb, could smell diesel, found leak on side of filter, this is on the left hand side looking from front of car, the filter case is all black apart from this bit that is white'ish, never noticed before and it's around this part that it is leaking, asking first before I start pulling things apart, just wondering if a cover of some sorts was missing? or is that just wishful thinking : )

Many thanks in advance
Bonne Chance

Bon Jour Stephen,

Is that the water drain off screw thats mention in the BOL. It may be loose and only requires tightening.

its the valve on the back that diverts some fuel through the warmer underneath the filter. its a common leak, i'm not sure if you can still get new seals but its all nice and easy to take apart and put back together :)

Stephen,

Here is a copy of a diagram from the french Xantia book, if you can identify the leak part from it great.

Hi Stephen,

I thought it was from your description. Looking at the diagram, there appears to be a seal or 2. Do you think they are responsible.

That's the fuel thermostat. It sends the fuel through a labyrinth in the thermostat housing when cold. It's a pretty common place for the housing to leak from.

There's two O rings on it. They're not available as replacements and the thermostat is hard to dismantle as it's held in place by a star clip.

Normal method of repair is to replace the whole housing or to remove the thermostat and seal the hole with a plug of chemical metal. If you do the latter the area must be spotlessly clean and free of every last trace of diesel or the repair will fail.

Hi Jim

I'm going to give it a go, replacing the O rings if possible if not then block it off or if I can get one replace the housing

Does it ever end !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
