Xantia oil leak

Hi, I have got a nasty oil leak, coming from the rocker gasket. About two oil changes ago , I started using "Millers Oils" , 10w - 40 , instead of "Mobil 1" . Could this be the cause of the oil leak ? Should I have stuck to "Mobil 1 " ?
Do I need to torque wrench the rocker cover back on ?

Hi Terry

I doubt that changing the type of oil would cause a leak, I think it would have happened anyway. You don't say what engine you have but taking the rocker cover off shouldn't be to difficult, I don't know if there is a specified torque for the bolts but just tighten them sensibly, the size of the bolts should give you a clue to how tight they should be.

The gasket goes hard after a few years, might be time to buy a new one.

As Xac says, the rubber gaskets do become harder as the years go by.

If your engine has a breather hose coming from the rocker box/cam cover, it could be that it's splitting at the end. I've had this happen on a TD engine, and the split occurred on the underside, where it was difficult to see

as Xac says fit a new gasket, but you will be best checking into the tightenig torque,

as many of these cam covers are case alloy and if you over do it you can crack them,

If it is a 16V (1.8 or 2.0) then camshaft cover nuts/bolts tightening torque is 10 Nm.
