The PLIP buttons are surface mount stupidly! And the solder can and does break quite easilly, its soldered onto the board in the 4 corners, with NO rear support to stop it breaking off...

Ive re soldered a few with a very fine iorn! Even applying a little bit more solder then previously, with sucess... You may find this is your problem.

The Actually buttons on the Circuit board, NOT The rubber covers!!!

If the buttons are removable then theres something wrong...

Replacing the rubber covers won't help - they are only there to keep dust and moisture out. If the switches don't work without the covers, they still won't with covers over them!

It'll be the switches themselves Allan. They are used all over the place in modern electronics and wherever they're found you can almost guarantee to find they become troublesome after a few years use. They're little membrane switches, not unlike those used on a keypad.

Replacements are freely available and I expect Maplin will stock something similar and suitable.

i also find sometimes the battery contact fail to make a conection, give the a very gentle slight tweek to tighten them up works,

as this will probably?? be an RF plip (and not IR) you cant even try the digital camera trick to see if its working,

Mk.1 Xantia PLIPs are a doddle... Any other Mk.1 Xantia PLIP IR type, can be programmed to a Mk1 car... So get one - making SURE its a Xantia one from Ebay...

Mk1 PLIPs were still available from the dealer a couple of years ago.
