what battery should my xantia have ?

Post by imperial21 »

Hi All
what battery should my xantia have ? its 110 hdi exclusive.
the battery fitted is a renault one which says 47ah 420a
In the cold mornings i am finding the car very slow turning over and the gauges go a bit mad ! i dont want the dials to stick as suggested they can.
I think the battery is a petrol one ? My cars previous owner did nt exactly look after it which has caused me so many questions !

I hope the previous owner didn't fit Renault spheres as well? They're bloomin' awful!

Certainly sounds to small for a diesel.

It is too small for a HDI 110 :(
I have petrol Xantia and I would not use that in mine :?

I checked from exide web pages according to your car's specs. They have a nice battery selector.
UK --> Xantia --> 2.0 HDI --> Battery

1. Starter Battery PREMIUM ***
Voltage: 12 V,
Battery Capacity: 64 Ah,
Cold-test Current, EN: 640 A,
Length: 242 mm, Width: 175 mm, Height: 190 mm

2. Starter Battery EXCELL **
Voltage: 12 V,
Battery Capacity: 62 Ah,
Cold-test Current, EN: 540 A,
Length: 242 mm, Width: 175 mm, Height: 190 mm

Although it may be smaller then what the specifications recommended for the car are I wouldn't be rushing out to replace it.

As long as it's turning the car over and starting it without it being sluggish then I wouldn't be spending money replacing it personally!

Trouble is it won't last long, especially when the weather gets colder.

If the battery voltage is falling low enough to cause erratic gauges then it's too low. You may find the radio will need the code entering when the weather gets much colder.
At some point the battery will fail on a cold morning if it's struggling now.
Plates may buckle on the lowest cell in the chain, this will cause an internal short which drop the voltage on one cell.

Probably a sign that it is on the way out. Modern batteries seem to "fall off a cliff" one day they work, the next they don't. Also not using the car for a couple of days seems to show it up more. First cold day on Sunday and the Xsara HDi, which had not been used since Thursday wasn't having any of it. Modern cars just need so much power, turn over speed was not that bad but there was no way it was going to start. Less than an hour on the battery charger and it was fine for the rest of the day. Didn't take a chance and in went a new battery by the end of the day.

I agree 100% with Peter.N. It is a bad surprise when you are looking for a jump start help, on a cold morning.

I bought a new one last June before going on the summer holiday.
Previous one was in use for 8 years and never disappointed 8-) Same brand is in engine bay now.

Be prepared for sky high battery prices. I was told that the prices have gone up since last 2 years

Problem is worse with an engine managed car, there is a minimum cranking speed set in the engine map, anything below that means no go !

If the battery telltale is green, then the battery should be all good - my experience is the telltale expires to a dead blackness long before the battery is kaput.

Could it not be the starter? (Very topical issue at present!)
