205 (non-PAS) steering UJ
Folks,
The nice MOT man had a little frown at the universal on the steering column of 'erselfs 205 whilst handing me a shiny green piece of paper the other day. A frown which was accompanied by a yellow piece of paper.
When we got the 205 (1.1 pikey-spec "Style", '90/G), the UJ was a bit stiff and notchy. Nothing that a quick spray of WD40 didn't cure, and the steering feels lovely now.
But Mr MOT, of course, had that bit closer look, and wrote "slight play" and "slightly deteriorated".
I gather it's a reasonably straightforward job, providing old age and corrosion haven't got their teeth into the column, but a quick rummage around the usual suspects doesn't find hide nor hair of the bits. What's the score there?

You have to watch this as you are almost on the changeover year.
The later ones have a square fitting into the rack, the earlier ones are round (if that helps)
Also unless someone's changed it, the early models have orange front indicators and twin reverse lights (built into the rear clusters) , the later ones have clear front indicators and the reverse light is in the bumper.
Early is known as 205F , later is known as 205N (typically late 90 / early 91 onwards)
Here is a pic and diagram of the 205F :
I was going to do the pics for the 205N models (the later ones) but that may confuse so I decided against it.

It's absolutely straight-original (one little old lady owner from new until we bought it) and definitely pre-facelift.spider wrote:Also unless someone's changed it, the early models have orange front indicators and twin reverse lights (built into the rear clusters) , the later ones have clear front indicators and the reverse light is in the bumper.

Those are the right pic's then I posted
I've never had to touch one to be honest, the only work I've ever had to do on a column area (so to speak) were replacement of the lock and a replacement rack, but both of these were on a later model.
As you can see from the pics, (working from memory too!) the UJ's are part of the shafts.
Scrapyard maybe best option, but worth a call to the dealer to check price / availability , you never know.
Remember I do not think you can interchange pre 91 and post 91 parts (so you need an earlier model) , none of these pre 91 had PAS (afaik in the UK anyway) so you should be able to find something without too much trouble hopefully. (PAS models have different lower columns again, just to add more confusion)

Although how much help they will be I am not sure, at least you have a couple of half decent pics, unfortunately they are the best quality ones I have, some area's are in more detail, typically not this (but at least you have part numbers too)

Re:
An update on this one...
The car's been sat for the last year and a half whilst we wandered around some of the farther corners of Europe in a <spit> VW camper, but we took it for a shiny new ticket yesterday. And it didn't get an advisory. It didn't just get a fail. It got a "DANGEROUS!"... on that UJ.
So it's awaiting a shiny new joint, found via fleaBay for £35 posted. Shamingly, it's a point-and-pay. We popped in to a local garage, who started making very enthusiastic noises - turns out their body guy, Dave, (a small patch was needed under the rear seat) has a couple of 205s himself and is enthusiastic about 'em. So - if you're anywhere near the NW corner of the M25, Rickwood Cars of Chorleywood might be worth a chat.
