There are several different pumps and when I enquired, was told the main differences are size and spacing/position of the pulley so it does sound like the wrong one's been fitted to yours, if I'm reading you right?

What Xantia is it? Each engine variant has a differenet setup.

It is unlikely to be the pump. I had the same issue with an Activa fitted with the wrong Alternator pulling the belt a groove off the pump.

On a 1.9/2.1TD the automatic tensioner is also notorious for causing this problem.

As said, let us know the engine and we can be more specific...
