V6 Xantia auto fluid. Can you tell new from old?

Been changed twice now. I will change a third time then take a sample. Box is going lovely and whisper quiet.

I think it is just heat Adam . Maybe V6 can post some of his recent stuff up that he changed out..........not unless he has painted his fences with it

on my 6 months one it looked vaguely transparent, I'm suprised the clutches last at all in these.

It must run very hot this tranny......they gave you a gauge to watch.

The transferred heat from that engine as well.

What kind of ATF cooler do we have in these? It aint in main rad is it? Has anyone put a Mocal type one on?

it is the main rad, there are threads about it and that it leads to the death of the tranny cos its lines cook the deposits into them. it was a good tranny for the time, offering good flexibility while on the motorway, but really its not up to sitting into traffic, fortunately i'm on the motorway most of the commute so its ideal for it.

So it`s conventional. We have an auto specific cooling radiator for the engine with the auto section inside and ATF hoses in and out? If that is the case then best option is always to fit an aftermarket Mocal or two with thermostat and bypass main rad OR buy the new Combined engine and auto cooler again........£0uch....these are expensive.

In other trannys the cooler inside main rad can block up at big mileage and kills pressure. I aint heard that mentioned recently on 4HP20............always the filter tray inside tranny itself.

The transmission cooler on a V6 sits on top of the gearbox and consists of a heat exchanger between the transmission fluid and coolant.

Suspected that. So the blockages are actually in the tranny filter tray and not cooler at all. Only pic will be from an engine on the floor ? Can it be seen with air filter off then?

The coolers are pretty reliable and don't seem to choke up unless, as in my case, the cooling system was full of rubbish from bodged attempts to seal a leaky matrix. The filter stops them getting choked.

Good job they're reliable. They cost an eyewatering sum of money new. In excess of £200

That oil looked well used Lexi..

It's easy to see how the filter becomes choked over time as there'll be a lot of dust and debris suspended in that sample, a good deal of which plugs the filter over time.

That oil was better out than in, that's for sure!

The boxes do run hot and this does not help anything. Actually, all the 4HP20s I've stripped to date don't show a huge amount of clutch plate wear. They either seem to be OK or totally wrecked due to something else failing.

I reckon that with regular oil changes and a filter replacement every now and again, the 'box will live forever. They really are a work of solid engineering; it's just such a shame the filter is not easy to replace...

Ah ...that`s a good pic of cooler. It also looks like a great place to tap in and out for a proper transmission flush should I ever feel like splashing out on the Esso again

Or is that just the water lines we see? Where are the ATF feeds?.
