C5 SIDE LIGHT KEEPS GOING

Post by reacher »

Happy new year everyone, as the title suggests, the side light bulbs have been replaced five times (by myself) in the last few months. Changed the off side one two weeks ago then two days later the other went, changed that and its gone again after a week. Wondering if its crap bulbs from Halfreuds(£5.35each). My hand book spec is for capless 5w but the bulb holder is for a bayonet fitting and they only do a 4w or 6w so have been using the 6w, cant see them blowing with one w less than spec but dont know. anyone got any ideas as its driving me daft and costing me as well!

Ive had to replace three on our facelift C5 now, very annoying as they are not the easiest thing to get at are they. I bet its cheap bulbs, some last no time at all.

They use a funny little bump, offset pins not capless. Quite hard to find from some places actually. I just went to my local motorfactors and get a few for a few £s

Had a similar issue with my C5, and found that a lot of the time, it was a loose connections on the wires to the bulb holder and not the bulbs themselves. :(

I had a similar problem on both cars: C5-II 1.6HDI until one day I decided to change it with LED's strip. I succeed to modify it myself without removing the headlight.

It is almost 1 year since then and no more problems... well maybe the front driving lights that I have to change one bulb at ~6 month but I admit I buy the cheapest one I can find because now I have experience changing it in short time.

I can't describe you how good it look in the night:

Citronel, those led lights look great, I was thinking of maybe converting to led but not thought of a whole strip. They do look good. Might try getting bulbs from somewhere other than Halfrauds.
Its the bulbs that are blowing so its not loose connections.

Thanks everyone.

They do look very nice, but how do you get the strip inside the hole and sort it out where it needs to sit etc. Its hard enough changing the bulb

Dead easy - take the front off the car

Actually the 'bumper' (no it isn't!) comes off without much bother.
Except it is far too cold for those shenanigans right now, or I would do something about my washer pump - maybe

I succeed to put the LED strip inside headlight without removing anything except old bulbs ( of course battery and protector from right ).
This are SMD LED's on flexible strip and first time it took me ~1h to fix the strip in place and fix it in position.

Citronel LED

Citronel, I am very impressed with your LED side lights and would like to do the same to my C5. Can you tell me where you got these lights, what length (size) and as much detail as possible. Did they come the right size or did you have to cut to length? I have been looking for some and have seen some that can be trimmed to length. :?

30 SMD LED's on flexible stripe with silicon insulation.
length: ~30cm and no need to cut from them.
I had to cut only part of the insulation at the first 5-6 LED's to enter properly on small space.

here its the package:

LED

Post by reacher »

I want to thank Citronel for all the very good advice and details about fitting LED strip lights in place of old side light bulbs. I have now done mine, it was quite easy and only took about an hour or so out in the freezing weather! They look really good and give the car a distinctive look. The LED strips only cost me £9.00 on ebay including delivery for a set of 2 - which is cheaper than 2 normal bulbs from Halfrauds (and they dont last very long) so I'm really pleased with them, I would recommend anyone to fit them with this type of Headlight.
Thanks again Citronel.
