Towbar electrics - Xsara P2

Post by Will »

Hi

Just bought a Witter towbar for my Xsara - a 2003 model. It came with a 'standard' electric wiring kit - by the looks of it you just tap into the rear loom to take power as per cars from old.

However, is this correct? The place I bought it from said it would do the trick but I've also heard that later P2's need a bypass box as they are multiplexed?

I'm confused! Any help would be appreciated! :)

Thanks
Will

Thats correct, the wiring will just tap in as normal to a multiplexed xsara with no problems.

Thanks for the info.

Is there anywhere that details which wire colour is which on the car loom or is it just a case of trial and error with a meter?

Cheers

Easiest way is a cheap test lamp & prod the wires.
Anyway, never go by wire colour on newish (post xantia) citroens, always go by the number printed on the wire & pin position, colours quite often change & in some cases there are connectors that have loads of wires the same colour.

Would it not be possible to make the connections at the rear lamp units? Saves messing with a meter. On my Xantia, I made most of the connections at the rear lamp units, as I don't like those connectors where you squeeze them on to the cable at any convenient point.

FWIW, on one of the BoL's Xantia wiring diagrams, I came across a 12v power feed shown, which I discovered ended in the car at a socket hidden behind the offside boot interior trim. Used this for permanent 12v supply for tent lights etc. :)

Yes thats the ideal place to make the connections, but how do you know which wires to connect the towbar harness to on the car without checking them with a meter or having an accurate wiring diagram ?

Uncle buck: I think he meant the wire identification on the cars wiring not the trailer sockets.

Thanks for your help guys. Its appreciated.

I'll take the feed from the rear lights as suggested and I'll also check each one to make sure it goes to the right place!
