Changing discs and pads on 1600 xantia

I am about to change the front discs and pads on my 1600cc petrol xantia.
I am about confused about the procedure for compressing the cylinders to allow for the new pads and also for the handbrake adjustment procedure. All tips gratefully recieved

Once you've got the old pads out, you'll see that on the piston there's a + cut out of it's face.
Get one of the old pads or a suitable flat rod, and stick it across the face of the piston in two of the notches.
Rotate the piston clockwise to screw it back in.
It takes a while to wind it back all the way.

Aren't they handed Xac, one going clockwise and the other counterclockwise?

Nope - not handed, both screw in clockwise.

Thanks for the help Xac, V useful. Still a bit confused re handbrake cable adjustment. Any help gratefully received

Hand brake should sort itself out. It is self adjusting. Operate the foot brake a few times and then the hand brake.
