406 TD ignition switch

Post by rayc »

When staring the car sometimes I have to wiggle the switch a couple of mm to get the fan and aircon to switch on.

Obviously it's wear in the plastic block at the rear of the ignition switch.

Are these replaceable cheaply or do I remember a wiring mod with a relay to overcome the problem? :?:

Thanks

Last time I did one in a 405 Ray, it was a straightforward job and the new switch and barel cost around £50.

If you have to "wiggle" it that much it may be too late for the relay mod :(

Hi Jim,

I spoke to an auto electrician today and he says its a common problem?

He says that he can solve it (He did my mates HDI) by placing a relay under the dash and it alleviates the problem. Something to do with the current draw?

He says £50 to do it but I wouldn't recoup that cost if I sell the car.

We've had it three years and I have to say it's been brilliant. But seeing as I currently have

1 x 4.6 Range Rover LPG'd
1 x 2.8 td Pajero
1 x 406 HDI SE Estate (Up for sale also)
2 x Clio's (For my sons)
1 x Galaxy TDI Ghia
1x Chevrolet 5.7 ltr Dayvan
1 x Quadbike
and 2 German shepherd dogs!

So, as you can see why I'm trying to cut down. Plus no work for 3 months things are getting tight. The Peugeots I think will be the easiest to sell and bring some much needed funds in.

Maybe it'll be a case of tell the potential buyer and live with it :?:

Your auto electrician friend is talking about the relay mod. It could be too far gone for it if you have to do a lot of wiggling. You could do it yourself, only takes a couple of hours with some cheap components, save yourself £50 and if it doesn't work, get him to replace the barrel.

Does anyone have a wiring diagram please?

I'm sure I saw it on here somewhere in the past.

When I say wiggle. I turn the key back about 1 - 2 mm and it starts the interior fan and a/c. That seems the only circuit affected

If you do it by this topic, another switch contact is used for the relay, and the dodgy one doesn’t get used anymore:

Brilliant. Thanks!

I checked the rear window and that works fine even though the fan doesn't. I'll do the relay rewire jobby this weekend weather permitting!

Watch this space! :D
