Citroen spotting in Scotland

Post by Mandrake »

Hi All,

I'm just back from 3 weeks visiting in Scotland, (my first trip to the northern hemisphere) and while I was there naturally I was keeping an eye out for Citroen's knowing that there are a lot more in the UK than New Zealand....

I visited Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stirling, Largs, Milport, Doune, and quite a large number of small towns whose names I've forgotten now.

I saw a lot more Citroen's than NZ, but not as many as I was expecting to be honest, and they were nearly all new models - Picasso, Saxo, Xsara, C2, C3 (?) C5, a couple of the "new" C5's (which I liked the look of) but what really surprised me is that I saw no "older" models of Citroen.

The oldest I saw were Xantia's, and I only saw a few of those, they were greatly outnumbered by the newer models above, and I saw NO BX's, CX's, GS's, or anything else. In fact I didn't really see ANY cars that were more than about 10 years old of any brand, which is quite unusual here - there are plenty of older cars still in use in NZ, but I guess in the UK they rust away before they get too old. (or newer ones are so cheap that older ones aren't worth keeping)

All in all an interesting trip - I had no internet access while there, (except open wifi spots found on my ipod touch  ) nor was I driving, thus my absence on the forum for the last few weeks. 8)

Regards,
Simon

We regularly do the North Scotland trip and dont usually see any XMs in a total of about 2,500 miles, I was in France last week and spotted 7 or 8 in two days.

Thought better of an earlier posted comment!?

There is a strong contingent of diehard Citroen fans in Scotland by all
accounts, though I've never made it farther than Berwick on Tweed!!
My roots are in Northumberland and that's wild/cold enough for me
and it's considered a mini warmer Scotland!! I've gone soft living here
in South Wales for so many years when I revisit my home town it's
a real shock to the system!

Interesting to hear an 'outsiders' fresh looksee at this place!
Seemingly most 'ordinary folk' in the UK these days are of the view
that anything over 3 years old is fit for scrap! If you have anything
over 10 years, you're positively mad, and anything over 20 years
you're a total weirdo!

Our political masters (particularly the unelected ones!) keep exhorting us to recycle, be 'green', and buy environmentally friendly (new) cars; ignoring two inconvenient facts:
1. Joe Average doesn't live in London, so needs a car but can't afford to buy a new car every 3 years.
2. The average life of a car in Europe is about 7 years. Of its total life-time environmental impact, manufacturing accounts for roughly 50%, fuel, tyres, spares etc, about 45%, and 'disposal' 5%.

Real greenies who get the maximum life from cars and thus minimise the annual impact, get penalised through higher road tax.

Perhaps things are different in Kiwi-land because there is isn't a powerful motor industry lobby? :?

Rant over!

Should have given me a shout, Simon! I could have shown you my 25 year old rust heap that once purported to be a Visa Decap

Hope you enjoyed our 'good' summer weather :?

I think the New Zealanders have other taxing matters on their minds:

Committed to the Kyoto Protocol, New Zealand promised to cut its emissions to 1990 levels. The country's biggest source is methane from cattle, and as Stephen Evans discovers, the issue is raising a stink among local farmers.

One of the reasons why some are suggesting Oz changes to roo meat rather than beef.
Course I wouldn't want to milk a roo...

You must have missed my 1996 Xantia and AX then :!:

Funnily enough I saw an XM in Kilmarnock today, a silver one just like the one I used to have....

All the best

Plus the fact that you can't repair them yourself! I'm sticking to my 12 yearold XMs as long as I possibly can
