Xantia Tachometer

My tachometer has gone crazy. When I start the car, it works fine. But after about 5 minutes, it's needle drop to zero and does not want to move. If I stop the engine, and let it cool down. Then it works again... and again it works for a short while only.
What could be the possible cause of this?

its quite common for the flywheel RPM pick up sensor to cause this fault

are there any fixes for this as mine has thsame fault, or is it a sensor replacement?

if its a non HDi diesel then its most likely the sensor.if the sensor is faulty on a petrol or HDi then it probably wont start.you can check the resistance of the sensor,i think it should be about 380 ohms but i can't remember which pins you measure it on.

Where is this sensor located? How can I access to it?

depending on the gearbox it may be mounted at the top of the gearbox in the bellhousing pointing at the flywheel and have about 8 inches of black wire coming out of it with a 3 pin brown plug on it.or nearer the front of the gearbox with the plug straight into it.just a single bolt holds it in.
