Yes... common 'characteristic'. It will be the heater blower resistors which can be replaced with a little bit of drilling and soldering (easy stuff) The motor is located in the passenger footwell under the glovebox just a few screws and it's out..... LOTS and LOTS of posts on getting the right resistors and pics of how to do it on here, just use the search facility... if you get stuck I have done it several times and even have spare resistors if you need help!

But if it's got climate control it will either be a fault with the transitors in the fan controller, or possibly the internal temperature sensor in the dash.
They are actually 'transistors' and they usually go intermittently open circuit, so it works sometimes. It sounds as though yours have gone short circuit, which would result in continious flat out operation. Type No at the bottom of my signature.
