2.2 HDI

Post by np »

Hi to all.Been away a long time, now back home from Cornwall for a while.
Hopefully in the next few weeks i shall be selling my Xantia.Sticking with French cars though.Thinking about getting a Peugeot 406 est 2.2 HDI.I know about these as my Dad`s on his 2nd(110) after a 90 bhp.
Not sure about the 2.2 though.Anything to watch for on these engines,or HDI`s in general.
Many thanks :)

I've also recently changed from a Xantia but decided to stay with Citroen C5. Thought about a 2.2 but read so many posts regarding the particle filter and Eloyes fluid needing expensive servicing that I went for the 2litre Exclusive. I've had it now for six months and towed with it to Southern Spain and I find it great..

IIRC doesn't the 2.2 come with a particulate filter which means 'Eolys fluid', ecu re-setting etc etc

Whereas the 2.0 doesn't

Peugoet/Citroen see the particulate filter as a success. They're using it now on the 1.6 Hdi, 2.0 Hdi 138 Bhp and the 2.7 Twin Turbo Hdi (used in Jag S type to start with but i've seen it listed for 407 and 607.. fingers crossed it may make it into the C5).

The Eolys oil (thats how its written on the Citroenet website and has a good write up on how it works http://www.citroenet.org.uk) is a liquid catalist which is injected at intervals to assist the incineration of the hydrocarbon particles trapped by the particulate filter. From what I've picked up on the subject basically the particles will naturally incinerate at 550 deg C but this is far too high a temperature to aim for so the Eolys catalist promotes combustion and enables the hydrocarbons to incinerate at the lower temperature of 450 deg C. It is new technology but looks like its now proven and hopefully should be reliable.

My C5 2.2 Hdi will need the Eolys oil topping up every 50,000 miles and the Silicone Carbide filter element will have to be removed to be cleaned too at his interval. I've seen some talk of owners removing their own filter elements and using a water pressure washer to clean them out and then buy some Eolys oil from Citroen and top it up themselves. And, they say that if you do this before the routine interval there will be no need to reset the onboard computer because the fault code won't have registered, otherwise, if like me you might just forget to do it soon enough, take it along to the dealer and pay a small fee for a reset.

I believe the newer models use a finer filter and the cleaning intervals will be 120,000 kM (around 80,000 miles) then even further development is looking at 250,000 kM intervals (150,000 miles) but with an updated version of the Eolys.

I've looked into it as much as I can since buying my C5 and am reasonably happy that it shouldn't give me any major problems....touch wood...fingers crossed..... 4 leaf clover in the glove box.....

Cheers, Kev

Thanks for the replys.I`ve think i`ve made my mind up on as late as possible 406 est executive 2.2 hdi.I like the thought of 136bhp,with the possibility of upgrading to 160 bhp :D .Looked at the site Kev thanks. It all seems pretty straight forward enough.
Hopefully i shall have about £6800 plus what i get for my Xantia. Will be going on Ebay for about £800 i think.
I might buy a BOL`s as they do 1 for the later 406`s now, have a look through it.
I may still go for a 110bhp HDI yet  ,but which ever,it must be in China blue :)

I have a Pug 807 2.0HDi with particulate filter and the change is due at 70,000 miles.

Hi to all.Going to buy my Dads car after all now.To good to miss.£5500-£6000 for a `03/53 Hdi 110 SE est, with half leather, sat nav, cruise control, etc, with no more than 55K miles, with new tax, tyres, service etc,all done just before i will get it.
I can live with the minor iritations i think. That way i will get an car with known history & 1 that has been very well looked after.
After looking around,it would seem a very good price for the age & milage.Just have to wait untill Oct now when he gets his new 407.
It wont be another Citroen for me,but at least its still French :)
