Peugoet/Citroen see the particulate filter as a success. They're using it now on the 1.6 Hdi, 2.0 Hdi 138 Bhp and the 2.7 Twin Turbo Hdi (used in Jag S type to start with but i've seen it listed for 407 and 607.. fingers crossed it may make it into the C5).
The Eolys oil (thats how its written on the Citroenet website and has a good write up on how it works
http://www.citroenet.org.uk) is a liquid catalist which is injected at intervals to assist the incineration of the hydrocarbon particles trapped by the particulate filter. From what I've picked up on the subject basically the particles will naturally incinerate at 550 deg C but this is far too high a temperature to aim for so the Eolys catalist promotes combustion and enables the hydrocarbons to incinerate at the lower temperature of 450 deg C. It is new technology but looks like its now proven and hopefully should be reliable.
My C5 2.2 Hdi will need the Eolys oil topping up every 50,000 miles and the Silicone Carbide filter element will have to be removed to be cleaned too at his interval. I've seen some talk of owners removing their own filter elements and using a water pressure washer to clean them out and then buy some Eolys oil from Citroen and top it up themselves. And, they say that if you do this before the routine interval there will be no need to reset the onboard computer because the fault code won't have registered, otherwise, if like me you might just forget to do it soon enough, take it along to the dealer and pay a small fee for a reset.
I believe the newer models use a finer filter and the cleaning intervals will be 120,000 kM (around 80,000 miles) then even further development is looking at 250,000 kM intervals (150,000 miles) but with an updated version of the Eolys.
I've looked into it as much as I can since buying my C5 and am reasonably happy that it shouldn't give me any major problems....touch wood...fingers crossed..... 4 leaf clover in the glove box.....
Cheers, Kev
