Oil light

Post by born2die »

Hi sorry to ask yet another lame question but I have the orange oil warning light flash at me when i first start the car after it has been sat for more than 30 mins I have checked the oil level and it is fine up to the max mark on the dipstick. So am I being paranoid or is my oil sensor up the spout and if so where is it so I can replace it.
many thanks in advance b2d[8D][:I]

In a car that new it will normally be a faulty sensor, can't help with the location on a Xantia, though!!!
Unless, of course, its done starship mileage with no oil changes or maintenance......

It's an oil level warning light that only flashes at start up if the level is low, and yes, it's orange! Prone to giving a false warning if the engine's only recently been shut down, or if the car is parked on any sort of slope. Often comes on (when it's supposed to I guess!) if the level is at or close to min as well. Well known to tell lies, so universally ignored. Use the good old fashioned dip stick!

I too had the same problem, the oil level is correct, and yet it will intermittently come on !

This is because (I think) the sensor is right at the edge of the sump.

My TD does the same if I park it with one set of wheels on a pavement, i.e. at an angle.

my flashing oil light doesnt come on if dipstick level is at MAX but if its below that and has been parked on a kerb it will sometimes give it the flashing action! I dont like having it filled to MAX anyway. Thinking of the MAX level do you think they engineer a muppet factor into the MAX level so that MAX isnt the real MAX allowing muppets to overfill by a few millimetres dipstick-wise?
