I believe they also used Isinglas for preserving eggs during the war..

They did indeed.
After the war (around 1953)remember my dad (marine engineer at the time) bringing home among other things a huge glass container full of eggs in isinglass. So the technology was still used then.
Rescued from a beached Dutch merchantman off the Whitby coast.

My wife used to use it in winemaking - she was vegetarian but ate fish, bacon & pork pies as it is well known that they are vegetarian too

 I'm a vegetarian and I enjoy fish on occasion... I firmly draw the line at bacon and pork pies though - I'm not a fan of cured meat unless I know what was wrong with it that needed curing...

Kosher bacon was a standing joke among the Yidden when I was at school but veggie "suet" - yup, Atora introduced it, must be, 20 years ago!

It's not the possible contamination that concerns vegans, it's the fact that an animal product was used.

I'm sure eggs were preserved long before WWII: I inheritted an egg preserving pan which must've been Edwardian BUT, of course, the preserving medium might've been different.

I'm intrigued now to know what eggs preserved in isinglas taste like?

I trust better than the other egg preserving method of picking them in vinegar...

Picked eggs in my experience are revolting to the greatest extent possible...

Pickled eggs must be an acqured taste - but why is beyond me.

I doubt preserved eggs taste much better, just different.

I don't recall what they tasted like but weren't vile or I would have remembered.

I've never eaten a pickled egg but I remember well the powdered egg from the wartime.

No sell by/use before dates back then off course but it must've had an indefinite shelf life because my school was still using (& possibly buying) army surplus powdered egg, in bulk, decades later.
