You didn't time the pump then, or you're a tooth out on the belt??

When i put the drill bits through the holes they all aligned, but i have to say the pump hub holes were almost all the way to the left. Now i adjusted them almost in the middle

I always mark the belt then transfer the marks to the new belt on XUD's 1/2 tooth?? Which way should I go? Too late now mind. Shouldn't need to move the pump. Hopefully Jim will advise.

I replaced the belt at an opportune time because the tensioner was very stiff, it could have seized up i think. I am surprised as everything i bought 3 years ago was genuine

Sounds as though the pump is a tooth out. I would go back and put all the timing pins in place again.

While replacing the belt, i noticed a small oil leak coming from the head gasket in the corner, is this normal or to be concerned with? Im not losing any oil between oil changes and not seeing oil dripping under car, just saw a bit of oil that to me it seemed that its under the head only

I waited till the morning to see how it starts, fired after 2 revolutions only, so its good but it sputtered a bit randomly and white smoke came out, but after a few minutes everything became normal, no more sputters and car runs good with no smoke. Does this mean timing of pump is a wee bit off? Or if it was it would smoke all the time ?

However when cold it misfires 2 times and thats it runs like a champ , i need to turn it very slightly to one side i think, which side should i turn the hub? Or i leave it as is
The only way to be sure the pump is correctly timed is to follow the exact timing setting/adjustment procedure for this particular engine/pump combination.

It's never a good policy to do it 'by ear' or by experimentation.

If the car is now running well, I'd be very tempted to leave it exactly as it is... Many diesels misfire a bit when first started from stone-cold and as long as it's very brief, I'd live with it if in all other respects it runs well and starts easily...

The cold misfire may well be due to worn glowplugs or a glowplug post-heating fault... IDI engines like the TUD5 rely on good glowplugs and an effective post-heating regime for easy cold starting and smooth running immediately after a cold start...

Think i found the issue, there was a paint mark on the pump that someone made before i didnt see that before. The pump toothed pulley is a tooth back. And the three vernier bolts need to be all the way to the right for it to work good. Glow plugsare brand nee. It only misfires a bit whem cold and smokes white.

The timing pins all go in when i put it at tdc. Its just the pumo toothed pulley that is a tooth back from the mark
