TUD5 timing belt

Hi, i have a citroen saxo 1.5 diesel and it has 109000kms, timing belt was changed at 66000 kms with a genuine timing belt kit, complete with everything including water pump.

Now, what mileage i should change it again ? And can i change the belt only or should i change the tensioners and idler aswell as a precaution? I do city driving and lots of short trips and stop and go traffic where i live. I heard this reduces the timing belt interval. Thanks :-D

Yes, it's due and change it for peace of mind... If it snaps it's not good news and some say short trips and city driving with frequent starts is harder on a belt than long motorway miles...

Many, on older cars that do little mileage, recommend changing the belt every five years, irrespective of mileage covered.

Do change the water pump at the same time and also tensioners and idlers if they show the slightest bit of wear...

A cambelt job is always going to be cheaper and easier then a full engine rebuild should the worst happen...

I don't have the service schedule for the Saxo and it is not available online given the age of the vehicle, but from what I can determine from the dealer it is about every 70k miles (Approx. 112K KMs) or 5 years - whichever is the sooner.

So far i did kmly 44000 kms, haynes manual says every 80000 miles, but it says change it at 40000 miles if you drive short trips and in traffic

According to my Haynes Manual, the belt change interval is 75000 miles. Whilst it gives mileage interval and a time interval for most other maintenance jobs, for the timing belt it just gives the mileage. We have a 1998 1.5D Saxo in the family which even now has only done 45000 miles. From my maintenance records, I did the belt myself and gave it it's first change in 11 years at 36000 miles. In view of the low miles, I didn't do the pulleys and pump - only the belt and auxilliary belt. Although it's only done 9000 miles since it's last change, it has been eleven years so it's just been done for its second time - this time with new pump and pulleys.

I think i will do it at 50000 kms interval, which will be around 115k kms i have a brand new gates timing belt, tensioner and idler. Im going to leave the water pump it was a genuine one and still not leaking for now

You may regret that decision... I've done that in the past only for the pump to start leaking a short while after changing the cambelt...

It's false economy not to change the pump at the same time...

Absolutely agree with Jim, for the sake off an extra few quid compared to time to redo everything.

You maybe right, considering im going to do it myself ill risk it, worst case scenario ill have to eat it and remove timing belt again, not a big job anyway.

I replaced the timing belt with everything including water ppump, now it isnt starting, i checked the timing all pins line up what is the problem?

I expect you have disturbed someting entirely unrelated to the cambelt whilst doing the job, most likely an electrical connector...

Recheck and I'm sure you'll soon find the culprit 👍

Did you disturb any of the diesel lines? (I don't know this particular set up). If before the pump, turn the ignition on and prime the pump, if it still doesn't go partially crack an injector pipe to see if any fuel is coming out. (Partially means loosely finger tight). Probably a wire though.

Update, spent like 2 hours messing with the diesel pump hub and adjusting, now it runs no smoke while running. However when cold it misfires 2 times and thats it runs like a champ , i need to turn it very slightly to one side i think, which side should i turn the hub? Or i leave it as is
