Are the cut-outs to clear fuel pipes? It doesn't specifically say so but I presume it's 27mm.

Funnily enough I ordered an ordinary 1/2" drive 27mm single hex socket (Silverline, £3.06 inc dely) the other day for the oil filter on my daughter's Pug 206 and I believe that my new C5 has the same type of plastic oil filter casing. I used to borrow my brother's 27mm deep socket on the odd occasion I needed one but, as it's really his wheel nut socket for his Land Rover, he gets a bit twitchy when it's out on loan. :rofl2:

Yep, the cut-outs clear the fuel pipes to give a better fit over the 'nut' on the top of the filter, and yep - it's 27mm.
From what I understand though, this isn't a universal socket for all diesel filters !! It'll only fit the ones that it is designed to fit :)

I haven't needed a socket for the oil filter until now as both the Xsara and 2003 C5 have canister type filters. TBH I can't remember (and cba to go outside and look!) whether either of those cars have the opportunity for a socket on the fuel filter as I've been able to remove the top using my hands. Still, best to be prepared.

I was reminded today just how useful a tool I once bought 'on-spec' is...

A variable length breaker bar... Just the ticket for undoing tight T55 Torx brake caliper bolts... You can adjust it to get maximum length within the confines of the wing...

Well, not exactly a waste of money but paying out before it's absolutely necessary.

The Xsara fuel filter has a plastic hexagon on top but it's considerably smaller than 27mm. The 2003 C5 has no hexagon and the 2013 C5 X7 seems to have no fuel filter that I can see! The oil filter on the X7 has a hex on the top and may be 27mm but there's so much stuff on top that there's no room for a ratchet or extension to go in.

Here's the socket fitted to my fuel filter top from about 5 minutes ago :)
The top of the housing is marked as Purflux FC582

Done it this morning with the special socket. Did think of sucking some diesel out first to make it tidier next time - can you use that small valve just left to the socket?

I open the water drain valve, so the fuel drains into a container as soon as air can enter the housing.

I think you can open the water drain valve at any time and possibly? pump the water out?

Yes, you can pump the water out, but only by pumping fuel in.
