Tool to remove oil/fuel filter

What is the recommended tool to remove the fuel/oil filter cap? Was going to try with a 27mm socket but don't want to damage the plastic as it seems to be a very tight seal.

My first question would be what sort of oil filter but I think the 27mm socket answers that. Providing that it is the correct size socket it should undo it OK. Make sure that it is pushed right on and apply rotational pressure slowly and it should come undone all right.

I agree with Peter, having just replaced mine using an adjustable wrench. I will be getting a 27mm flexible ratchet spanner next time, about £14 from Ebay.

I have a set of these and they are very useful but I did see a set somewhere - possibly Halfords, that had ratcheting open enders - not flexible at that end though.

No movement - worried that i might break something if i apply more force. Really strange. Do you guys remove the metal guard or leave it in place?

I agree it does feel as though something will break. After disconnecting the fuel lines, I use a half inch drive 27mm socket well located and with a short extension, if you don't have a breaker bar you can increase the legth of your ratchet with some one and three eighth plastic pipe (sink variety). As Peter says ensure that all the effort goes into rotation.
Gradually increase the effort until it slowly starts to turn, the rubber seal in the plastic housing is a very tight fit and you will notice the stops for re fitting as in my opinion there is no 'feel' as to what the final tightness should be. The metal bracket can be left in situe, use it to stuff some rags to soak up any fuel that spills as it comes apart.

Yes it does An excellently written procedure for this difficult task. Exactly the technique I use on them...

Always, if it's tight and needs gently applied force to move it then a log breaker bar is by far the best tool. It might seem counter-intuitive but it works every time because the force is a lot more controllable and therein lies the secret.

I do that with loads and loads of tools and invariably they do, even if not strictly for their intended purpose...

An example being oil filter pliers being great for the final removal of spheres...
