There is one rock solid Is it, or isn't it test for a failed headgasket.
With the engine stone cold, start the engine and idle it for 45 seconds before switching off. Now remove the coolant filler cap. If water emerges under pressure, the head gasket has failed. If not, 99.9% certainty that it hasn't.
