106 Timing Belt

Is it possible to change the timing belt on a peugeot 106 (TU1engine}without the peugeot tensioning tool as mentioned in the manual.I ask because DIY the job is relatively simple and cheap[:)],whereas taking it to a peugeot garage isn't[:(].

My guess would be that lots of garages fit belts without using the recommended Pug/Cit tensioner. They rely on experience - and by turning the tensioned belt with finger and thumb through 90 degrees.

I`ve changed a few belts on Renaults where the manual says that you need the tool.Never used 1 & never had any probs.
As JohnD says above,get the belt on and tightend,then use finger and thumb.

I have changed the timing belt on my 205 tu3s engine several times and, as is said above, just using the common belt tension practices will be OK; turn the belt through 90 degrees and no more and leaving about 5mm of free play in the longest stretch of belt should do.

You may even find that the dealers tension checking tool wont reach the belt when the engine is in the car!
It's a scam by the main dealers to get you back there to get the job done "properly" (ahem!).
